Dastakaari Haat

It’s that time of the year when the best artisans and craftsmen in the country sell the most enticing accessories, bags and clothes. Dastakaari Haat has become a fad in Chennai which offers people of all ages a range of handicrafts to choose from. The event is organized by Dastkari Samiti and Kalakshetra Foundation. The highlight of this year is a stall right near the entrance where a man braids your hair with colourful threads that will stay for a month.

People have come from remote villages in Rajasthan to set up stalls. Some of the stalls that were set up include pottery, paper items made from elephant dung (haathi chaap), silver accessories, jute items, cloth bags and purses, Black Longpi pottery from Manipur. Quilt patchwork in vibrant colors, bandhini work materials, brass materials, cloth bangles and other accessories, wooden crafts and Patachitra scrolls. There are around 100s of stalls, all packed with India's rich heritage of handicrafts and handlooms and what you see in each and every stall is really breathtaking - It clearly out beats any other craft festival that is conducted in the city.

Dastakaari Hat will be held till January 22 at Kalakshetra grounds.
